Lights, Camera, Action!
The first step to creating a successful Youtube Channel is to be prepared when it comes to making videos! There are many different routes and potential options to create videos, but let’s stick with the basics. I’ll be going over the easiest way to film with your phone camera, the simple lighting sources you should use, and the basics to using a microphone, if required. While this may sound a bit complex and expensive, you can easily start up a Youtube channel for less than $50! I did, and I’ve created over 250 Youtube videos using some of the inexpensive equipment mentioned within this article. Happy Youtubing!
The Camera
This is where the creation of a Youtube channel can bring more of an expense, or could make it extremely easy! For me, I use my Iphone XR camera, which I already had before I started creating videos, so I didn’t need to buy anything new. I even used my previous Iphone 6 camera previously, and still had decent quality! I urge that when initially starting a channel, try and utilize what you already have, like your phone camera, as long as it has decent video capability, and you’re able to export the videos onto a PC or Mac computer. Let’s assume you’re going to use your phone camera, as I do, and keep the cost lower when starting a Youtube channel.Â
Next Step: Mount Your Phone!
A Phone mount is extremely beneficial to not only yourself, but also your viewers! It keeps the camera still during filming, and allows you to capture various angles while not needing to hold onto your camera. I have used the two tripods shown to the left and right, while I still use the tripod shown on the right side of this post. The smaller tripod shown on the left has bendable legs, but I suggest the larger tripod shown on the right, because of its extendable legs and variable camera positioning feature (plus it is larger in general for a low cost). These are SUPER useful, and I highly recommend them for filming your Youtube videos, especially for beginners who use their phones (like myself)!
Next Step: Simple Background Lighting
It’s all about the lighting! Lighting can be extremely helpful or hurtful to creating videos, and is a necessity for any Youtuber who doesn’t always have natural light. This basic LED Desk Lamp has been a wonderful investment (barely any $) for my Youtube channel, and works great for me! Not only is it LED, had a bendable neck to allow for different angles, and also has different dimming settings… it also has a USB port that I can charge my phone with while creating videos! I may be biased since I’ve only used this LED lamp while creating all of my Youtube videos, but it has worked extremely well for me, so I recommend it. I have also listed a few other LED Lamps that have highly rated reviews, so they could be great for starting a Youtube Channel as well.Â
Situational: Audio Equipment
Audio is Very important, because many people don’t even watch the videos, but listen to what is happening! Audio can make or break a youtuber, so I suggest paying attention to how your videos sound. When I first started making videos, I used a lavalier mic, as shown in the image, that greatly helped my videos with only picking up my voice, and not as much noise around me. This was with my old Iphone, and connected with the audio jack cable. When I got my IphoneXR, the audio jack hold went away, and I reverted to using the Iphone’s microphone option, which still works great as long as I’m in a quiet environment! So, you don’t technically need a microphone if you can keep your surroundings under control, but in many scenarios, it may be beneficial to get one! I used the PowerDeWise Lavalier microphone shown in the image, but I have also listed some of the top rated microphones below that can be found on Amazon’s website!
